The 'AmazonFACE' project is a large-scale, one-of-a-kind field experiment that aims to study how the Amazon rainforest will respond to the elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO₂) levels projected for the future (around 2050-2060).
The project is located near Manaus, Brazil, and involves six large rings made of steel towers that extend above the forest canopy.
The project uses Free-Air CO₂ Enrichment (FACE) technology to create a "climate time machine" and observe the forest's adaptation in real time.
A primary goal is to determine if the increased CO₂ will stimulate forest growth and enhance its ability to absorb carbon or if nutrient limitations will constrain this response.
