• The West Bengal Chief Minister recently laid the foundation stone of a 5-km-long bridge over the Muriganga River, aimed at improving all-weather connectivity between Sagar Island and the mainland.

About Sagar Island

• Also known as Gangasagar or Sagardwip, Sagar Island is located in the Ganges delta of West Bengal.
• It lies about 100 km south of Kolkata and forms part of the South 24 Parganas district, comprising 43 villages.
• he island is situated at the mouth of the Hooghly River (a major distributary of the Ganges), separated from the mainland to the east by an arm of the river.
• Though geographically part of the Sundarbans, it lacks tiger habitats, mangrove forests, and small river tributaries typical of the delta region.   
• ਪੱਛਮੀ ਬੰਗਾਲ ਦੇ ਮੁੱਖ ਮੰਤਰੀ ਨੇ ਹਾਲ ਹੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਮੁਰੀਗੰਗਾ ਨਦੀ ਉੱਤੇ 5 ਕਿਲੋਮੀਟਰ ਲੰਬੇ ਪੁਲ ਦਾ ਨੀਂਹ ਪੱਥਰ ਰੱਖਿਆ, ਜਿਸਦਾ ਉਦੇਸ਼ ਸਾਗਰ ਟਾਪੂ ਅਤੇ ਮੁੱਖ ਭੂਮੀ ਵਿਚਕਾਰ ਹਰ ਮੌਸਮ ਵਿੱਚ ਸੰਪਰਕ ਨੂੰ ਬਿਹਤਰ ਬਣਾਉਣਾ ਹੈ।   

ਸਾਗਰ ਟਾਪੂ ਬਾਰੇ

• ਗੰਗਾਸਾਗਰ ਜਾਂ ਸਾਗਰਦੀਪ ਵਜੋਂ ਵੀ ਜਾਣਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸਾਗਰ ਟਾਪੂ ਪੱਛਮੀ ਬੰਗਾਲ ਦੇ ਗੰਗਾ ਡੈਲਟਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਥਿਤ ਹੈ।
• ਇਹ ਕੋਲਕਾਤਾ ਤੋਂ ਲਗਭਗ 100 ਕਿਲੋਮੀਟਰ ਦੱਖਣ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਥਿਤ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਦੱਖਣੀ 24 ਪਰਗਨਾ ਜ਼ਿਲ੍ਹੇ ਦਾ ਹਿੱਸਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਵਿੱਚ 43 ਪਿੰਡ ਸ਼ਾਮਲ ਹਨ।   
• ਇਹ ਟਾਪੂ ਹੁਗਲੀ ਨਦੀ (ਗੰਗਾ ਦੀ ਇੱਕ ਪ੍ਰਮੁੱਖ ਵੰਡ) ਦੇ ਮੂੰਹ 'ਤੇ ਸਥਿਤ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਕਿ ਨਦੀ ਦੇ ਇੱਕ ਸ਼ਾਖਾ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਪੂਰਬ ਵੱਲ ਮੁੱਖ ਭੂਮੀ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਖ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ।
• ਹਾਲਾਂਕਿ ਭੂਗੋਲਿਕ ਤੌਰ 'ਤੇ ਸੁੰਦਰਬਨ ਦਾ ਹਿੱਸਾ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਬਾਘਾਂ ਦੇ ਨਿਵਾਸ ਸਥਾਨ, ਮੈਂਗਰੋਵ ਜੰਗਲ ਅਤੇ ਡੈਲਟਾ ਖੇਤਰ ਦੀਆਂ ਛੋਟੀਆਂ ਨਦੀਆਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਸਹਾਇਕ ਨਦੀਆਂ ਦੀ ਘਾਟ ਹੈ।
