- Sakharov Prize 2025 has been awarded to two imprisoned journalists, Andrzej Poczobut of Belarus and Mzia Amaghlobeli of Georgia.
- The award is announced by the European Union (EU), its highest human rights honour.
- Andrzej Poczobut, a Belarusian with Polish roots, is a correspondent for Poland's left-liberal newspaper Gazeta Wyborcza.
- For many years he has been an outspoken critic of the Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko and his regime.
- In 2023, after a closed-door trial, Poczobut was sentenced to eight years in jail.
- Mzia Amaghlobeli is a prominent investigative journalist in Georgia.
- In August 2025, she was sentenced to two years in prison for slapping a police chief during anti-government protests.
