Gujarat launches India’s first tribal genome project to tackle inherited diseases.
About Tribal Genome Sequencing Project

Objective: To identify genetic health risks and enable precision healthcare for tribal populations.

Scope: It will sequence the genomes of 2,000 individuals from tribal communities across 17 districts in the State.

Implemented by: The Gujarat Biotechnology Research Centre (GBRC).

Focus: Early detection and targeted treatment of genetic disorders such as sickle cell anaemia, thalassaemia, and certain hereditary cancers.

- The Parumala Perunnal is an annual festival celebrated at the Parumala Church in the Pathanamthitta district of Kerala.
- It is a week-long Christian festival that culminates on November 2nd, the commemorative feast day of Saint Gregorios of Parumala, also known as Parumala Thirumeni.
- The festival honors Geevarghese Mar Gregorios, the first canonized saint of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church , who passed away in 1902 at the age of 54.

- This directive mandates that all public and private medical professionals, pathologists, and healthcare institutions report every diagnosed case of leprosy to the local health authorities within two weeks.
- The move is part of the state's goal to achieve a "leprosy-free Maharashtra by 2027“.
- Leprosy, also known as Hansen's disease, is a chronic bacterial infection that primarily affects the skin, peripheral nerves, upper respiratory tract, and eyes.
- It is caused by slow-growing bacteria, Mycobacterium leprae and Mycobacterium lepromatosis.
- Leprosy is not highly contagious.
- It is primarily spread through respiratory droplets (from the nose and mouth) during prolonged, close contact with an untreated infected person.
- Most people (around 95%) have natural immunity to the bacteria and do not develop the disease.
- Leprosy is curable with multidrug therapy (MDT), a combination of antibiotics (dapsone, rifampicin, and clofazimine) provided free of charge by the World Health Organization (WHO).
