England’s legendary fast bowler, James Anderson, was formally knighted during an investiture ceremony held at Windsor Castle on 28 October 2025.
He received the honour from Princess Anne in recognition of his monumental contribution to cricket.
A knighthood is one of the highest civilian honours conferred by the British monarch, awarded to individuals for exceptional achievement or service in any field, including arts, science, public life, or sport.
HISTORY
The first Indian to receive a knighthood was Rabindranath Tagore, who was knighted by King George V in 1915.
He later returned the title in 1919 as a protest against the Jallianwala Bagh massacre.
Sunil Bharti Mittal: Founder and chairman of Bharti Enterprises, received an honorary Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (KBE) in February 2024 for services to UK-India business relations, making him the first Indian citizen to receive the honour from King Charles III.
N. Chandrasekaran: Chairman of Tata Sons, also received an honorary KBE in 2025.
