Initially launched in 1978 as the Expanded Programme on Immunization, it was rebranded as the UIP in 1985
Since 2005, under the National Rural Health Mission, the UIP has become a central component of India's public health efforts, focusing on ensuring that vaccines reach every child

National Immunization Day, also known as National
Vaccination Day, is celebrated in India on March 16 of every year.
The first dose of the Oral Polio Vaccine was administered in 1995 on this date, under WHO’s Global Polio Eradication Initiative which had begun in 1988.
