Wildlife Institute of India released its first all-India assessment and monitoring report on endangered species (vultures) / ਵਾਈਲਡ ਲਾਈਫ ਇੰਸਟੀਚਿਊਟ ਆਫ ਇੰਡੀਆ ਨੇ ਲੁਪਤ ਹੋ ਰਹੀਆਂ ਪ੍ਰਜਾਤੀਆਂ (ਗਿਰਝਾਂ) ਬਾਰੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਪਹਿਲੀ ਆਲ-ਇੰਡੀਆ ਮੁਲਾਂਕਣ ਅਤੇ ਨਿਗਰਾਨੀ ਰਿਪੋਰਟ ਜਾਰੀ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ
- This report, based on a nationwide survey conducted between February 2023 and January 2025, represents the first systematic effort to assess the nesting and status of four critically endangered resident vulture species: the White-rumped Vulture, Indian Vulture, Slender-billed Vulture, and Red-headed Vulture.
- KEY FINDINGS
- Vultures have disappeared from nearly 70% of their known historical nesting sites across the country.
- A total of 213 active nesting sites were identified, with nearly half of them located within protected areas.
- Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan hold the largest concentration (63%) of all nests, indicating a regional clustering of the remaining populations.
- The Indian Vulture remains the most widespread species, while the Slender-billed Vulture population is now largely restricted to Upper Assam.

- ਗਿਰਝਾਂ ਦੇਸ਼ ਭਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਜਾਣੇ-ਪਛਾਣੇ ਇਤਿਹਾਸਕ ਆਲ੍ਹਣੇ ਵਾਲੀਆਂ ਸਾਈਟਾਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਲਗਭਗ 70٪ ਤੋਂ ਅਲੋਪ ਹੋ ਗਈਆਂ ਹਨ.
- ਕੁੱਲ 213 ਸਰਗਰਮ ਆਲ੍ਹਣੇ ਵਾਲੀਆਂ ਥਾਵਾਂ ਦੀ ਪਛਾਣ ਕੀਤੀ ਗਈ ਸੀ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਲਗਭਗ ਅੱਧੇ ਸੁਰੱਖਿਅਤ ਖੇਤਰਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਥਿਤ ਸਨ।
- ਮੱਧ ਪ੍ਰਦੇਸ਼ ਅਤੇ ਰਾਜਸਥਾਨ ਸਾਰੇ ਆਲ੍ਹਣਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਧ ਗਾੜ੍ਹਾਪਣ (63٪) ਰੱਖਦੇ ਹਨ, ਜੋ ਬਾਕੀ ਆਬਾਦੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਖੇਤਰੀ ਸਮੂਹ ਨੂੰ ਦਰਸਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
- ਭਾਰਤੀ ਗਿਰਝ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਧ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਪ੍ਰਜਾਤੀ ਬਣੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ, ਜਦੋਂ ਕਿ ਪਤਲੇ-ਬਿਲ ਵਾਲੇ ਗਿਰਝਾਂ ਦੀ ਆਬਾਦੀ ਹੁਣ ਵੱਡੇ ਪੱਧਰ 'ਤੇ ਉਪਰਲੇ ਅਸਾਮ ਤੱਕ ਸੀਮਤ ਹੈ।
