Justice Surya Kant to take oath as 53rd Chief JusticeofIndia on November 24/ ਜਸਟਿਸ ਸੂਰਿਆ ਕਾਂਤ 24 ਨਵੰਬਰ ਨੂੰ ਭਾਰਤ ਦੇ 53ਵੇਂ ਚੀਫ਼ ਜਸਟਿਸ ਵਜੋਂ ਸਹੁੰ ਚੁੱਕਣਗੇ।
He has been part of several landmark verdicts and orders on abrogation of Article 370 removing Jammu and Kashmir's special status, Bihar electoral rolls revision and Pegasus spyware case,
He will succeed Justice B.R. Gavai.
Justice Kant was appointed as the next CJI on October 30 and will remain in the post for nearly 15 months. § Appointment: Article 124 (2) provides for the appointment of CJI by the President.
Appointment of CJI follows the dual convention of consultation with the outgoing CJI and appointing the senior most judge of the SC as CJI.
As per the Memorandum of Procedure, the Union Law Minister first seeks recommendation of outgoing CJI, forwards it to the PM who then advises the President.
Tenure: Till the age of 65 years.
Oath: Administered by the President.
First CJI: Harilal J. Kania.
Scrutiny: Office of CJI falls under the Right to Information Act (RTI), 2005.
