Indian Railways has emerged as the biggest electrified rail system globally, with nearly 99.2% of its broad-gauge network electrified as of November 2025.
It serves as India’s national transporter, operating one of the largest railway networks in the world.
The achievement is part of Mission 100% Railway Electrification, aimed at cleaner, efficient, and energy-secure rail operations.
Electrification Drive: Initiated historically in 1925, with mission-mode acceleration after 2014.
Coverage: About 99.2% electrification (~70,000 km) across 25 States/UTs.
Renewable Energy Push: Solar power capacity expanded from 3.7 MW to 898 MW, supporting green rail initiatives.
