Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan set to become new Vice President of India
Bharatiya Janata party, on 17 August 2025, announced Maharashtra governor CP Radhakrishnan as National Democratic Alliance's candidate for the upcoming Vice-President election, scheduled for September 9, 2025.
If elected, Radhakrishnan will succeed Jagdeep Dhankhar, who resigned as Vice President last month citing health reasons.
Vice-President is elected according to Article 66 of the Constitution.
Electoral College: The Vice-President is elected by an Electoral College consisting of members of both Houses of Parliament (Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha), including nominated members.
Election Process: The election is conducted by proportional representation using a single transferable vote through a secret ballot. The candidate must be a citizen of India, at least 35 years old, qualified for election to the Rajya Sabha, and not hold any office of profit.
